Two days after Thanksgiving, Kennedy arrived at Hyde Park to submit his formal resignation. FDR spent only ten minutes with Kennedy before he summoned Eleanor, and, out of Kennedy’s earshot, told her, “I never want to see that son of a bitch again as long as I live. Take his resignation and get him out of here.” When Eleanor reminded FDR that Kennedy had been invited for the weekend, he told her, “Then you drive him around Hyde Park, give him a sandwich and put him on the next train.” Eleanor had lunch with the now-former ambassador and said later that listening to Kennedy’s defeatist views about the war, and his expressions of resentment over his treatment at the hands of the press, the British, and the Roosevelt administration, were “the most dreadful four hours of my life.” Worse was to follow.
